Jands has just completed the final leg of Jands@Home for the calendar year, and going by the response we got we’ll be doing another round in 2010!So far we’ve been to Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane, with future plans to hit these cities again in the first half of next year, and possibly even further afield. The following was discovered by The P.A. People while undertaking upgrades at the Sydney Olympic Park. After the beekeeper had dispersed an estimated 20,000 bees from around a JBL-MS115 installed in the common area of the Sydney Olympic Park, this speaker revealed a very interesting sight. No longer working, on closer inspection what looked like honeycomb material, turned out to be exactly that! 40kg of honey was extracted from the speaker.

OK, OK, OK! So we all read in the last issue of Backstage about the unforgettable Rock Isle (Mulwala) Festival in 1972 and the excitement of being part of the early music movement, aluminium brief cases, tight jeans and big belt buckles. But what about all the forgotten people in the industry?...I relay a festival story only for “Bean Counters”…the accountant’s account of Narara 1983.

The 80’s was a golden era for Australian manufacturers. Protected by high tariffs against international competition, companies like Jands could sell most of what they built. By the mid 80’s Australia was committed to lowering tariffs and Australian manufacturers had to compete internationally or close up shop. Jands decided to get out of the manufacture of audio products and concentrate on lighting consoles and developed what we hoped would be our first international product.

Here is a photo of Tim Carlyle from Sound Solution in Lismore holding a very old (maybe 1970s or 80s) Jands Dealer sign. It's pretty obvious from this that Sound Solution has been a dealer of Jands for quite some time now. Thank you Sound Solution for preserving this iconic peace of Jands history. We are pleased to say that this sign will be making its way back to the Jands Head Office and will be added to our collection of memorabilia on display.

The Aussie electro-pop outfit Empire of the Sun has had worldwide success with their single Walking On A Dream from the album of the same name and last month they made their long-awaited live debut at the touring Parklife festival. We talk to Shure Endorsees Empire of the Sun about their experiences using the products from this legendary brand.

Tim Levinson (alias Urthboy) is a Hip-Hop MC and Producer from Sydney, best known as part of the band The Herd. He has also released three solo albums, Distant Sense of Random Menace, The Signal and Spitshine, released in August, 2009. Tim has been a fan of Shure products for several years and a few weeks ago he took delivery of a Shure PSM600 Wireless Personal Monitor System which he uses alongside the traditional stage wedges.
