ETC’s SmartFade ML

In our last newsletter we introduced you to the new ETC SmartFade ML.  The great news is that stock has arrived and we are even more impressed with the power and ease of use of this new console having had time to get to know it better.

ETC is the world’s leading supplier of professional lighting control systems and luminaires.  Major Arts venues worldwide use ETC control desks, dimmers and of course the iconic Source 4 range of luminaires.  The great news is that ETC are now offering systems for smaller applications and at unbeatable prices!  Now you too can use the control systems that the professionals use and save money too!

David Lincecum, ETC’s Marketing Manager, offers some clear insights into what makes SmartFade ML so special below:

Building on the acceptance of Smartfade, we have tailored ML to run moving lights.
A few items - right off the bat, because you are wondering - it handles 24 moving lights and 48 dimmers channels over 2 DMX ports. It allows you to run your show "hands on" using faders, or using a cue stack. It handles moving lights in powerful - yet very accessible ways - in the same desk.

I believe a college student running their first show and a "weekend warrior" earning a living on corporate gigs, fashion shows or tent events will be able to enjoy the desk equally. We packed a lot into this small form factor and that is what I mean by VALUE.
This desk has smacks of it!

What have we done for beginners? For starters - patching lights is very simple and the included library is immense - the same library you'll find in our larger consoles.
Once patched, the moving fixtures will immediately move to home positions
- ready for the lamp to come on.

The 24 buttons in the upper left of the desk are "direct selects." In the default mode you use them to select fixtures. Later they can be re-purposed to select color/beam and position palettes, effects and more. They are RGB backlit and will always indicate the color of their associated fixtures!

Next - you'll find the faders on the desk are also "multi-purposed." In their default mode they will map to the first 24 parameters for the ML's. Yes - this means you can control pan/tilt and other parameters for selected fixtures using encoders. It works really well and you have 24 parameters at your fingertips. Now if this sounds disgusting to you:
1. Give it a look, you may be surprised,
2. You can use the encoders to do the parameter control just as well
- so don't snub the desk yet.

For the advanced and beginner users alike we offer Hue/Saturation color mixing. Set the Hue to red, adjust the saturation down to get pink! Great for those who are not CMY savvy as well as those who are. (Of course CMY and RGB are available via the encoders!)

Built in effects are available - both shape effects for pan/tilt as well as single parameter chase effects. The effects can be applied over static looks and get recorded to the cue stack or the fader based memories. They are easy to use.

All these features for just $4850.00 RRP.  It’s hard to believe!

David has produced an excellent online training session on the new Smartfade ML which is available on the ETC website.

JANDS Embarks On New Ventures

Jands is proud to announce its success in being awarded contracts for two major Melbourne projects.

Two months ago, Jands won the contract for the Melbourne Theatre Company & Melbourne Recital Hall against numerous applications and tough competition, including an international consortium. The project will take more than 18 months to complete, but our team is already on-site, including our new contracted Melbourne based staff.

Now Jands has done it all again, by winning the staging and lighting contract for the new Melbourne Convention Centre (MCC)!

Jands has been engaged to supply the MCC
with 6 massive stage lifts. In addition Jands will
be supplying all the hoisting, drapes and performance lighting requirements for the venue.
When combined with the MTC/MRC project,
Jands will be manufacturing over one-hundred-and-fifteen 1,000kg hoists, together with 10 stage lifts and a myriad of other components, such as dimming systems, for both projects.

Winning “the” two major projects in Melbourne is an outstanding achievement for Jands and represents a significant expansion of our Staging group and the organisation as a whole. It certainly highlights to the Australian market place that Jands is now clearly the leading supplier of theatre and staging equipment in Australia.

Both projects will combine the resources of our own engineering and manufacturing capabilities together with input from:

  • Stage Technologies Limited (UK)
  • ASM Steuerungstechnik GmbH (Germany)
  • Serapid S.A.S (France)
  • Gala Systems (Canada)
  • ETC - Electronic Theatre Controls Inc. (USA)

The close partnerships forged with these innovative manufacturers, further reinforces the prominent position Jands holds as Australia’s supplier of leading world standard products.

Tech Tips

JANDS Introduces the HPX Dimmer!

Jands have just announced they are replacing their HP series dimmers with the new HPX.  Why the change?

We are always looking to improve the competitiveness of our products and make them easier to build  and more suitable to our customers needs.  The HP series has been with us for over 10 years and in that time the market’s requirements for dimming has changed a good deal and a new product line was long overdue.

Also as Jands business has expanded worldwide we needed a dimmer product that could work in many different markets with different power supplies and connector requirements.  In short we needed more flexibility than the HP series could offer.

What are the major differences between the old HP and the new HPX?

The major differences are in the way we construct the product.  In short the HPX is designed as a series of  blocks so that we can offer customers  a range of features and outlet styles without having to build a whole range of complete dimmer products.   Simply put the HPX range is manufactured as a series of components that can then be assembled in any configuration as required in a very quick time.  We refer to this as a Build to Order process or BTO for short – think of the Dell computer model

For the operator,  the HPX is easier to use than the old HP.  In response to feedback from our customers we have simplified the menu options and made them selectable by a simple button press interface much like your mobile phone. Rather than the old 240/120/60 volt selections on the HP the HPX lets you set the maximum dimmer output anywhere from 40 to 100% of the mains input. The dimmer can also be set up to run from single or three phase supplies from 100 to 240v and between 40-65Hz meaning it can be sold to any market worldwide.  There has also been major advances in the filtering which  make the HPX even better at rejecting mains tone interference from" noisey” power supplies.

How does all this benefit the customers? We just want a reliable dimmer like the HP was!

The benefits come in every area.  If you require a dimmer with Socapex rather than Australian 3 pin outlets then we can assemble them quickly from the stocked components rather than you having to wait until the next run of dimmers is made.  Also in offering you a choice of high or low risetime filters and triac or SCR switching devices you only pay for what your application needs.

We will build HPX components in large runs to improve efficiency so there are significant cost savings to be had as well.  For example a new HPX with the same specifications as our old HP12TR dimmer will cost you nearly $500 less at retail.  At the same time this increased stocking of HPX components means we will be able to keep up with demand fluctuations better and reduce waiting times on product.

Doesn’t having all these options make ordering my dimmers more complicated?

Not at all.  You must remember that a lot of the options exist to cater for overseas requirements.  If you want a dimmer with the same specification as the old HP then all you need to do is take the standard HPX with Australian outlets and Clipsal 40 amp connector. - This is the HPX12-AZ100.  The difference now is if you require some other configuration we can quote you quickly and deliver on time and your choices are clearly outlined on the HPX Technical specification sheet.

When can we start ordering HPX dimmers?

The basic HP replacement model is available now!  This is the HPX12-AZ100.  We aim to have the full range of HPX options online by September of this year and this will include a 12 channel 10 amp relay option for remote controlled switching of mains supplies.  Watch the Jands website for full details.

Microphone Polar Pattern Run-down

A microphone is a transducer, its role is to transform acoustic energy (sound) into electrical energy (the audio signal). That is, the microphone is giving you an electrical representation of a sound wave. The quality and accuracy of this representation depends on a number of areas. Today we will be looking at Polar (or pick-up) Patterns. An understanding of this will help facilitate better microphone selection, placement and technique.

There are five commonly used patterns, these include; Omni-Directional, Cardioid [or Uni-Directional], Super-Cardiod, Hyper-Cardiod and Figure 8 [also known as Bi-Directional]. The three most common of these are:

Omni-directional

  • Equally sensitive to sound from all directions, but cannot be “aimed” to isolate one area, i.e. 360º coverage angle
  • Uniform frequency response
  • Low handling, wind & breath noise
  • No Proximity Effect                       [Proximity Effect; a change in the frequency response as a sound source    is brought in close proximity to the                                                           microphone. The result of the change is an increase in the bass response]
  • Well suited to the recording and broadcast environments

Cardioid

  • Picks up the most sound from in front of the microphone. As cardioid mics have great rear rejection, they are less susceptible to feedback in high volume live sound environments
  • Overall frequency response varies as sound source moves away from 0º
  • Coverage angle: about 131º
  • Proximity Effect
  • Well suited to both recording and PA work

Supercardioid

  • Variation of Cardioid
  • Directional pick-up with greater side rejection. Less rear rejection than cardioid.
  • Coverage angle: about 115º
  • More Proximity Effect [over the cardioid design]
  • Screens unwanted sound sources. Ideal for individual instruments in a multi-microphone setting, or single sources in noisy environments.
  •  Well suited to recording & PA work
