Soundweb London - Four New Family Memebers

BSS Audio is proud to introduce four new members of the Soundweb London family:
        • BLU-800
        • BLU-320
        • BLU-160
        • BLU-120

The Soundweb London family now includes seven different signal processors which form the building blocks to address any scale or type of application.

DSP Capability
The new devices featuring configurable DSP (BLU-800 and BLU-160) boast four times the processing capability of existing Soundweb London DSP devices.

BLU-Link
BLU-Link, featured on the BLU-800, BLU-320, BLU-160 and BLU-120, is a fault-tolerant bus of 256 channels. In addition to providing a backbone for the transportation of multiple channels, BLU-Link also facilitates the creation of large, fault-tolerant, centralised matrices containing one or more BLU-Link capable devices.

Cabling and Distance
BLU-Link uses standard, inexpensive Category 6 cabling which enables a distance of 100m between BLU-Link compatible devices. Fibre media converters and fibre can be deployed to increase this distance in excess of 40km.

Fault Tolerance
The ring topology of a BLU-Link system allows failure of a single connection with full retention of all BLU-Link channels and negligible interruption to audio. Comprehensive error reporting notifies users of a cable fault or termination issue in order that necessary steps can be taken to restore the integrity of the system. Further processing fault tolerance can be achieved by spanning matrices over multiple devices.

Large Matrices
The combination of BLU-Link and increased DSP capability allow 128 x 128 matrices within individual devices and 128 x n matrices within a system.

Perfect Match
Each of the seven different processors maintains device level I/O flexibility and offers a different mix of signal processing, CobraNet and BLU-Link functionality. This makes a Soundweb London system the perfect match for any application.

Coming to ENTECH???
Don’t forget about the presentation on the above, to be given by
Iain Gregory - BSS Product Manager, at midday on the Monday of the show! For full details see the Special Announcements section above.

Deluxe Audio rate the Soundcraft Vi6™ Digital Live Console
best on the market!

Melbourne-based Deluxe Audio has a solid reputation within the Australian audio market and they are known for keeping up to date with their hire inventory. Consequently a digital mixing console has been top of their shopping list for the past few months.

“Both Michael Shanahan, one of the other directors of Deluxe Audio, and I have spent the last twelve months using different digital consoles in all parts of the world, and at either end of the multi core,” commented Dave Rees. “It’s interesting how your perception changes once you’ve made the decision to purchase a digital console. It certainly makes you look beyond the obvious. After every gig or tour Michael and I would discuss the merits of the console we had been working on.”

After their extensive hands-on research, Dave and Michael decided upon the Soundcraft Vi6™, the first Australian hire-company to do so and they are both extremely confident that the next twelve months will see a dramatic increase in local engineers keen to use the Vi6™.

“In a nutshell – it’s easy to use, handles complex mixes, has a compact size, is reliable, is affordable, and sounds great!” declared Dave. “I think we’ve definitely chosen a winner!”

The Soundcraft Vi6™ Digital Live Console features a unique integration of Vistonics™ II technology, a derivation of the Vistonics™ user interface developed with sister console company, Studer. It uses touch-screen colour-coded TFT monitors with rotary controls and switches built in and around the glass, enabling direct access to all functions at all times and providing maximum information and visibility.

Not surprisingly, Dave was particularly impressed by the intuitive operation of the Vistonics™ II control surface, describing it as compact and very ease to use.

“I found my way around the console in no time at all,” he said. “It really was a short learning curve. The layout is similar to an analogue desk, which of course we’re all used to, with everything right there in front of you. The screen functionality is extremely user-friendly and totally ergonomic.”

Soundcraft's new DSP package provides eight mono or stereo effects units that may be patched to aux bus outputs and then back into a channel input, or inserted into input or output channels. All effects are controlled from the console's intuitive graphical displays for full control integration.

Each of the 64 inputs offers high- and low-pass filters, a powerful, four-band parametric EQ section, compressor, limiter, gate or de-esser, pan and more. Plus, all 35 outputs offer BSS dynamics and a newly implemented (variable bandwidth) 30-band graphic EQ, making it a really flexible console to use.

“A great deal of the development time was spent waiting for Lexicon to develop a new DSP engine just for the Vi6™ and I can assure you it was well worth the wait - the 8 stereo FX are stunning to say the least,” Dave remarked. “Add to that BSS gates, comps and EQ’s and a control surface that is completely logical and you have something that engineers are going to love using. Plenty of consoles have basic processing on them nowadays, but having quality Lexicon processing built into the Vi6™ certainly puts this console one step ahead of the others on the market.”

Features such as the console's ability to save and recall console-wide snapshots of the control settings and routing, the ability to connect auxiliary units and playback devices via AES and MADI digital inputs, and the ease of assigning controls to functions also helped Dave with his decision.

”I also like its compact footprint - having 32 inputs on each layer is a huge advantage,” he noted.

Of course the Vi6™ also sounds fabulous with Dave reporting that the feedback he’s had from other engineers and his own perception is all the same – “it gave me space in the mix, a separation I have not had before”.

Dave recently did monitors for the Rogue Traders new album launch at Sydney’s Enmore Theatre using the Vi6™. The entire band was using In Ear Monitors and, according to Dave, they all made positive comments about the open feel of the mix.

Tech Tips

Timeline Programming Explained

Timeline Programming is Better...

The Jands Vista console is the first entertainment lighting console to fully embrace timeline editing to program lighting, instead of a traditional ‘cue-list’.

In traditional consoles, the operator records a series of individual cues into a cue-list, and one or more ‘fade’ and ‘delay’ times are used to determine when and how long it takes to transition between each of the cues. Usually, these times are entered via a numeric keypad and a cue-list spreadsheet. This presents a lot of work when programming moving lights, as potentially each moving light, and each parameter of the moving lights, may require a distinct fade and delay time. It also becomes very hard to determine “what will happen after I push play?”, because all you see is a screen full of numbers.

In Vista, each parameter of each moving light is represented as a bar (or ‘event’) on a timeline. If you want the ‘fade time’ of the position move to take longer, you simply click on the end of the bar and stretch it to the right. If you want a colour to change after the light has finished moving, you drag the colour event to sometime after the position bar. With the Vista you can actually see everything that's happening in your design in relation to time: when lights come on, when they go off, when they change colour, when they move. In our example above, you may have the lights moving in 1 second, and changing colour in the next second. What happens if you need the whole cue to take an extra half-second? In Vista, simply select both events together and stretch them till they’re another half their length!

When you consider that how and when a moving light moves, changes colour etc. is often just as important as what it does when it reaches the recorded cue.

It’s easy to understand why timeline editing makes so much sense.

It’s All A Power Struggle

It seems we are all engrossed with power ratings in the audio game.

Power ratings are generally the first specification bandied about when discussing amplifiers and/or loudspeakers. Be it a sales person selling you the latest high tech device, a group of guys gathered in the local McDonalds car park comparing “fully sick sub woofers”, or those annoying guys with pommy accents driving the white van that always seem to pull up next to you at traffic lights!

A very famous physicist once said, “you canna change the laws of physics” – or was that Scottie in Star Trek? Either way, contrary to what some marketing types may think, the ProAudio world does obey the laws of physics. One of my favourite laws of physics is the law of conservation of energy, which simply states that you cannot create or destroy energy, only change its state. This law also states that the useful output energy tends to be less than the total input.

So how does this relate to power in audio systems?

...Stick with me and I’ll explain.
